Research-use scope. This page explains documents and terminology. It is not for use in people or animals, contains no handling or procedural guidance, and does not replace the receiving laboratory's own acceptance criteria.
Documents and identifiers
- Certificate of analysis (COA)
- A report issued by a laboratory describing the tests performed on a specific sample and the results obtained. It describes one sample from one lot on one date.
- Certificate number (report ID)
- The identifier the issuing laboratory assigns to a report. Used to confirm the document with the laboratory's verification page.
- Lot (batch) identifier
- The code that names one production batch of a material. It appears on the vial label and on the report; the two must match for the report to apply.
- Labeled strength
- The nominal amount of material in a sealed vial as printed on its label, for example 5 mg. A report for one strength does not describe another.
- CAS number
- A registry number that uniquely identifies a chemical substance, published on each product listing so an identity result can be compared against the right reference.
- Molecular formula and molecular weight
- The elemental composition of the substance and its calculated mass, used as the reference for a mass-spectrometry identity result.
- Verification portal
- The issuing laboratory's own page for confirming that a certificate number, sample, lot, and date correspond to a report it issued.
Methods and results
- HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography)
- A separation method: a dissolved sample passes through a column and its components elute at different times, producing a chromatogram.
- Chromatogram
- The plot of detector response over time produced by an HPLC run. Each component appears as a peak.
- Retention time
- The time at which a component elutes from the column under the stated conditions. Comparable to a reference standard run under the same conditions.
- Peak area
- The area under a peak on a chromatogram; proportional to the detector response for that component.
- Chromatographic purity (area %)
- The main peak's area divided by the total area of all detected peaks, expressed as a percentage. A relative measure within one method; it does not account for anything the detector cannot see.
- Mass spectrometry (MS)
- A method that measures the mass-to-charge ratio of ions from a sample. Used to support identity by comparing the observed mass with the theoretical mass from the molecular formula.
- Observed vs. theoretical mass
- The mass measured by the instrument compared with the mass calculated from the formula. Agreement within the method's accuracy supports identity.
- Identity
- Whether the main component is the substance named on the label. Supported by MS and, secondarily, by retention-time comparison.
- Purity
- How much of the detectable material is the main component. Distinct from identity and from quantity.
- Reference standard
- A characterized sample of known identity used for comparison in a method.
- Test date
- The date the analysis was performed, as stated on the report. Distinct from the report issue date and from the production date of the lot.
- Reporting limit
- The lowest level a method reports for a given analyte; results below it are reported as such rather than as zero.
Materials
- Lyophilized (freeze-dried) material
- Material from which water has been removed under vacuum at low temperature, supplied as a dry powder in a sealed vial.
- Sealed vial
- A container closed with an intact stopper and seal. An intact seal is part of the receiving check.
- Research use only
- The stated scope of supply: laboratory, analytical, educational, and in-vitro research. Not for use in people or animals.
On Arctic Lab Supply reports. Each published report in the batch COA library lists the lot, the chromatographic purity result, the test date, and the certificate number, with the PDF and the issuing laboratory's verification link. Each report also has its own batch page, for example BPC-157 5mg lot BCP-2502-B.
